BLACK VATANA AMTI

Ingredients :

¾ cup dry black peas/kala vatana
1 medium tomato, chopped
¼ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp red chili powder
¾ to 1 tsp garam masala powder or goda masala or malvani masala
2 tbsp oil
1 tsp mustard seeds
salt as required
chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

Roast :
2 tsp oil
4-5 cloves
10-12 whole black pepper
1 tbsp coriander seeds
1 heaped cup of fresh grated coconut

Method :

1)     pressure cook the vatana for around 6-7 whistles (this takes a long time to cook). Do not throw the water
2)     in a pan roast the ingredients above in oil till coconut become light brown. Make a paste of this with 1 tbsp of cooked chana and keep aside
3)     in a pressure cooker, add oil, splutter rai, add haldi powder.
4)     Sauté tomatoes till mushy, add salt, haldi powder, chilli powder and goda masala
5)     Add the ground paste, the cooked chana and the water used for cooking and give 1 whistle more.
6)     Garnish with coriander leaves
7)     Serve hot with steamed rice
