BROKEN WHEAT UPMA

Ingredients :

Broken samba wheat - 1 cup
water - 2 cups
onion chopped fine - 1 big or 2 medium
green chillies chopped into 1/2" pieces - 3
ginger grated - 1/2 "
carrot grated - 1/2
peas (optional) - 1/4 cup
salt to taste

for tempering :
oil - 2 tbsp
mustard seeds - 1 tsp
urad dal - 1 tsp
chana dal - 1 tsp
curry leaves - 6-7

Method :

In a pan dry roast the wheat till it becomes light pink and keep aside
In a non stick take oil and add ingredients for tempering and fry till mustard seeds splutter and the dals become light brown
add the onions, green chillies and ginger and saute till onions become light brown
add the wheat and saute well
add the carrot and peas and mix well
add 2 glasses of water, salt  and cook till the wheat gets cooked and blends well. you can add more water if you think it is not enough

This is a very healthy dish and very good for diabetics.



Variation :

the south indian way for making broken wheat upma :

broken wheat - 1 cup
water - 1/2 cups
grated coconut - 5 tbsps
salt to taste

for tempering :
coconut oil - 2 tbsp
mustard seeds - 1 tsp
urad dal - 1 tbsp
red chillies - 3

Method :

Pressure cook the broken wheat for 1 whistle. cool it and use (it should resemble a crumble and should not be sticky, hence I have used less water for this recipe)
in a pan take coconut oil and add ingredients for tempering.
as soon as mustard seeds splutter and the urad dal gets brown, add the cooked wheat
add salt and mix well 
lastly garmish with grated coconut
